American Roentgen Ray Society - Lifelong Learning
Maintenance of Certification
The maintenance of certification (MOC) process, as initiated by the American Board of Medical Specialties and the American Board of Radiology is designed to facilitate and document the professional development of each participating radiologist. Radiologists with time-limited certificates are required to enroll in the process. The ABR encourages those with lifetime certificates to participate as well.
MOC attempts to establish a relationship between practice, education, and outcome. The basic components of MOC are:
- Professional standing;
- Participation in life-long, self-directed learning demonstrated by the accumulation of 500 hours of education over 10 years (50 hours per year) including periodic self-assessment to guide a program of study;
- Successful completion of an examination that is partially comprised of questions gleaned from the individual’s self-directed learning program;
- Participation in a practice evaluation that demonstrates adequate quality of care and physician professionalism and patient communication skills.
The ARRS offers a broad array of CME Programs and self-assessment modules to assist radiologists in meeting their MOC needs. Additional programs are added throughout the year.
