About the Scholarship

The ARRS Research Scholarship supports research in the radiologic sciences for early career faculty members who have not yet been recognized as independent investigators. One nomination may be submitted annually by individual departments, medical schools, or clinical research institutions.

The ARRS Roentgen Fund Board of Trustees may select up to two awards annually.

The Scholarship is a two-year program. Scholars receive $180,000, and ARRS requires a minimum 20%-time commitment.

Conditions and Responsibilities

The cooperating institution is expected to assume the same full responsibility for the detailed administration of the scholarship for the ARRS Scholar as for any other member of the faculty supported totally within its own budget.

Title and Rank: The title “ARRS Scholar”, if used, should only supplement the Scholar's regular faculty title and rank.

Faculty Mentor: The Scholar is required to identify a faculty mentor for their scholarship project.

Salary: The salary of the Scholar, as well as all other budgetary matters, will be determined by the cooperating institution.

Schedule and Payments: The scholarship runs from April 1 to March 31 for two consecutive years. Scholarship funds will be paid to the cooperating institution in two equal installments annually. Unexpended funds at the conclusion of the scholarship must be returned to The Roentgen Fund®.

Publicity: ARRS reserves the right to use information submitted in the application and subsequent reports including the Scholar’s name, photo, institution, project title, and abstract in marketing and promotional materials.

Commercial Support: The Roentgen Fund® might receive funds from commercial companies to support scholarship programs and some recipients may have their scholarship named after a commercial entity. It does not imply commercial endorsement of the scholarship recipient, the research, or the institution.

Interim Report: The Scholar will be required to submit an interim report in August between year one and year two of the scholarship. The interim report should include a summary of the progress achieved, significant changes to the original proposal, expenditures, and indicate any delays or challenges. A report format will be provided by ARRS.

Final Report: The Scholar will be required to submit a final report in August of the year the scholarship is completed. The final report should include project accomplishments, outcomes, and impact; participants; expenditures; and deviations from the original proposal or interim report. Authors who wish to bypass the right of first refusal process must receive written permission from ARRS. “ARRS Scholar” should be added to any scientific publications that are a direct result of the scholarship proposal or prepared during the course of the scholarship. A copy of any publications resulting from the scholarship-funded work should be sent to The Roentgen Fund® Board of Trustees

Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research Early Career Investigator Program: The Scholar may be required to participate in the Academy's Early Career Investigator Program. This will entail travel to Washington DC to participate in the Academy's annual medical imaging technology showcase in the Senate/House, attending meetings with NIH program directors, meeting with their Congressional representatives, sitting in on the leadership research roundtable, and networking with patient advocacy groups, industry and academic leadership. Participation also includes becoming part of the Council of Early Career Investigators in Imaging. The Academy will handle all logistics and ARRS will sponsor travel costs up to $1500.
